19th Century French Landscape by John Daviniere

This striking piece of art is oil on canvas and depicts a tranquil scene on a river in the golden hour light, with a single figure on a small boat. It is signed by Daviniere, who I believe to be John Daviniere who was married to Dido Belle, the famous aristocrat, who was the illegitimate daughter of an African slave woman Maria Belle and British Naval officer John Lindsey.  Lindsey brought Dido back to England and she was raised by his uncle as an aristocrat, which was exceptionally rare at the time. The 2014 film Belle tells this rather unique story.

John Daviniere married Dido Belle in 1793 and they had 3 children together. Belle later died and John remarried and had 2 more children, in 1828 he moved back to his birth town of Ducey in France and this is where I believe he painted this piece on the banks of the River Selune.

The painting is in excellent condition for its age and with one or two small marks on the canvas which can be seen in the images.

The frame is also in great condition. It is a weighty carved gilt wood frame.

About us

About Us

We’re a husband and wife team,  based in Heaton Moor in South Manchester and very much think and operate as a local business with the personal touch of a small independent shop.

Our Collections

While our collection is a moveable feast, we specialise in French and European antiques. We love beautiful authentic pieces that have provenance and a story behind them. Our range includes antique gilt mirrors, chandeliers, antique art and vintage tableware. Every item is unique, interesting and always beautiful.

Our Ethos

We’re led by our own personal style, rather than passing trends. Inspired by the Golden Age of Europe - from the opulence and grandeur of 19th century European palaces the streets of Bohemian and the rich culture of the Belle Epoque - think Renoir, Zola Picasso. To the sun drenched villages of historic Provence. This is about beautiful living and living beautifully. Making life an art.
